Iris (Yuting) Zeng is an artist from Chongqing, China, based in Somerville and works in Cambridge. Her multidisciplinary practice bridges the physical and the experiential. She is deeply interested the human condition through the lens of the body, memory, senses, and the land. Her background in biological anthropology, where she studied tooth sections and spinal structures of paleo-anthropoids, inspired her to investigate the bounds of human experience as a Homo sapiens. Without formal training in art, she approaches creation as a natural extension of life—essential and intuitive, like breathing. she is energized and enlivened by moments of connection—sparks that emerge through collective making, tactile experience, and meditation. Iris is also ranked second globally(first in two categories) in Apple’s leaderboard for a minimalism racing game (Unpossible).

	Grip

Medium: Charcoal on Newspaper

Year: Dec 11th, 2022.
	The grip started out from a sensorial experience of rubbing hands on charcoal on the newspaper. With the varying speed carrying into and out of the corner, the width of the contact surface of the hand, and the friction from downforce. This large series of work meditates on the variations of the grip that can be learned at different scales and in different conditions.

Part of a larger gestural practice of understanding of the mechanical grip between charcoal and newspaper. This palm size vignettes is part of the series of projections of forms out of the learned matter interaction and spiritual tendency of the body and mind.&#38;nbsp;

Gleaned from abstract art and found patterns of everyday life this series is a test of speaking and thinking through pal, and a process to reason with it, producing forms and connections through spatially influenced parts. It gives maximum freedom to creation while cannot escape the grammatical system of expression. The emergence of meaning from signs and symbols, and their relational properties are at the essence of the making of languages, and yet no specific meaning is assigned to a component or form, therefore the work itself dissects the semiotic process. The series of work informed the subconscious relational structure of future forms, specifically: where connections between forms should be made, where to put a point as the gravitational center, as opposed to linear conscious reasoning. This work is always ongoing, rather than a linear conscious reasoning with definite results.
